Your topic 'Extraterrestrial Life' [ETL] is an intriguing one for the simple fact that it is a personal discourse at best since there is not one shred of evidence uncovered or not that an ET has EVER visited this planet-regardless the hype of the 'Ancient Aliens' TV show nor does ETL exist around another rocky planet. [Yes, I am well aware of the various planet hunting ideas and techniques employed today and in the past-I even look for planets on Zooniverse]
Now, life as we know it on this rocky planet is a mishap, accident, calamity. In order for me to say that one has to read the right books, listen to the many speeches, conversations, discussions, etc... on the subject and not to rely on those hideous yet simple-minded TV shows.
There is only one fact we can rely on, and it is the exact fact that this planet established a place or position in space 3.5 billion years ago that was capable, through all the ramifications of early solar system confusion and make-up originality to form this planet within a 'habitable zone' of a star. We have to realize this as a given condition of our existence from ALL that came before.
This means minimally that one, for a lack of a better word, 'intelligent life- form' [human being] incubated on Earth and saw other various life-forms including flora and fauna we see today and that which have also been documented from the past planet's history that we study at Colleges and University's around the world.
Therefore, personally speaking and presuming in and on a very large historical data format, that there would seem to be one, intelligent or not, life-form per galaxy.
However, when employing the famous Drake equation, and there are other additions to this formula as well as other ideas of exclusions and inclusions to this formula and others, years ago I calculated, and this was well before any extra-solar planets were discovered in the early 1990's, that 2 to 3 other civilizations could be in this Milky Way galaxy! Civilizations, yes, because that is what the equation asks to solve.
So far we have made discoveries [not very many] of other planets around other stars and have documented the various solar systems containing gas and rocky planets, with perhaps a few total water worlds thrown in but yet to be confirmed. Rocky planets [perhaps with an atmosphere-of sorts] are the main thing here for thought, since we are on one. Mentally consider all the conditions that have taken place in the past that we know about to produce a life-form of any kind! You will soon see, and I would consider you to be an intelligent person, that our plant has had a very nasty formation and structural development in itself-and this is more than likely a very typical situation. With that thought in mind, place it in another solar system and include a moon with other planets circling that star. Trust that this world is in that star's habitable-zone too and must undergo all the exact same conditions of early planet formation we know about today to make a world like ours.
Do you see any difficulty? Can you imagine 'different' but NOT 'same'? Can you imagine a moon pounding this planet and gathering through gravity its smaller parts to orbit it? Perhaps to some degree not exactly that way, but a moon none-the-less acting gravitation-ally on the planet's infrastructure to distort and replace repeatedly the top soil and whatever is on it with its subsequent atmosphere for billions and millions of years. This kind of action accounts for the planet to form into a smooth hot rocky ball of water and soil. Are there other worlds that have endured this torture of nativity the exact same way as the Earth? I said earlier...one per galaxy!
Then there is a question of life itself and what I am talking about here are the same conditions the Earth tolerated during the subsequent 'quiet' years of a constant swing around the Sun establishing a near perfect orbit and with its rotation and tilt. Its like picking the exact order the balls fall in the Power Ball lottery holding 1.3 billion dollars for the next draw. Do you know those 5 numbers with the bonus?
No one does.
Photosynthesis is the most important by-product of this planet-I consider. Its description to 'come about' in nature is endless. But it happened. Would this process happen on the ETL world too? It would have to, to make sense of other alien world activity. Would there be the same but similar flora and fauna on that ETL world...there would have to be something similar I suspect.
Then would those dinosaurs die out? Or are they still there? Were there any at all? Does a planet require dinosaurs to have future intelligent life and do these dinosaurs have to die out for that to happen. This idea encompasses all the same requirements and conditions of the early Earth and what it tolerated to become a nice blue [polluted] dot in the future! [tic]

I would argue about the rarity of this life we exist as, but we have no possible examples of failure to find life as yet.
What would Mars be like if we found it here in our orbital zone? We knew it would almost certainly fail without a near static ice condition of water, therefore almost certainly no life as we know it here.
As organics have been shown at about 4.1 billion years past, an explanation for not finding it sooner is a clear indication of our inability to find it anywhere other than Earth as yet.
As prions were not considered as life until recently, we should not consider the mechanisms predictable and comprehensively observed.
Reviving tardigrades after 30 years frozen shows we have no capability of knowing the limits of life. Seeds thousands of years old germinate and grow from recent experiments.
We observe swarm behavior as a primary method of human conduct, yet it appears to be as failure prone as insect and animal behavior.
In politics we conform in majority to the 'hot/cold, love/hate yes/no' insanity of cyclical insured failure transpiration, yet we laugh at our behavior and our failure.
The routine process of life is death and decay with a short interlude of activity.
It's just a matter of time to find a measurement and observation method.
It took a hundred and ten years to look closely at Pluto, and we are now rewriting the outer planet descriptions.
Every time I find an object appearing to be a remnant, living, or fossil life-like shape on Mars it often meets with peculiar silence and a lack of critical discussion, or simple complaints that an object is not indicative of life if it is a singular example of unexplained chemistry and history.
The suggestion that the Mars rovers have not found possible life-like items is simply not true. With the number of items found between many persons studying the images, the possibility of not having found life-like shapes is zero.
Paul, do you have any observation suggestions about items on Mars or elsewhere we might look to find actual 'extra'terrestrial objects suggesting life exists beyond Earth?
As we have only these few rovers and landers for closeup viewing, there is a small field of perspective as yet. We need hundreds of sources for a statistical understanding of the possible fossil, remnant, or living items which we see. I have spent time eliminating many tiny objects as unusual mineral and crystalline inorganic shapes which are not published as they are rare even in Earth collections, and they are often not imaged but only described in text as reported shapes. Even the massive resources now used and open to the public do not give us examples to view of rare finds. Research portals and not-open-to-the-public sources are often hidden from view on the internet search engines unfortunately.
Endless reordering of minerals and crystalline complexes are possible on Earth.
New life is always being discovered and examined each year.
Unusual Earth items in the news such as
Water based, and not known as either ancient or recently transformed from complex life,
Wikipedia, try searching 'Trichoplax'
for details not expected in a small animal.
Also, try this for some mystery of the possibilities as to Earth life transitioning to unusual niches and requirements,
How could anyone expect a Planet with liquid and stability to not possibly develop life-like systems based upon liquid crystal functions and differentiating complex chemistry?
Supposition until we study Mars returns for a first taste of 'extraterrestrial' sampling for the first time. Of course, there were the Moon samples and meteorites.

Water liquid-liquid transition from simple to unusual to simple, apparently merges with the occurrence of life at the unusual transition zone.
An Earth based vertebrate(s) which has adapted to the current known limits of vertebrate capability, particularly for a water type animal. Certainly we know of microbes and even insects or virus capable of extremes, but this shows the recent and complex life types have adapted to possible conditions of a less than Earth-like weather, and general environmental set of conditions.
A microbe or animal embedded in water, ice, mud, or who knows how many other materials can survive even as Earth based life's 'comfort zone' evolved conditioned objects for months or many years without the basics commonly expected of directly observed life types.
How would a stress inducing set of conditions on another planet or satellite or 'minor planet' respond and develop and adapt?
We were shown on the rovers results many objects which could be reviewed as formerly living or currently capable of being fossil remnant or cast replicas of life type objects on Mars. Why a state of denial, lack of downloading, and disinterest is so common is a mystery to me.
Novel polymerizations are only now being understood both as possible mechanisms of adaptation and possibly evolution of organics.
So much lack of persistence in the seeking of extraterrestrial life type adaptations within the current news reports which are constantly being added to the available encyclopedia of evidence about Earth as a source of examples and possibilities.
It seems strange that the common must substitute in persons minds with the detailing of the unique and the unusual in the references to life beyond Earth.

Separately we see in the newest MSL Curiosity rover images suggestions of detailed assemblies which might be active and complex, as possible objects requiring chem cam testing for biological signatures or other related content such as casts or shells assembled of local 'sand' from Mars dunes at Gale crater area.
There has been some sampling, but a curious disregard for the complex structures to be tested and reported about. Why?

If the underside of Mt. Sharp layers are more active than the upper surfaces, why is there no detailed study of the bottom of these active layered rock structures? How could such lack of study be fruitful?

Cells that 'see' as humans do, approximately.
Synechocystis cells see at half a billion times smaller receptors than the human eye, and respond by growing extensions which allow them to transport themselves in seconds toward or against the perceived shapes. These cyanobacteria developed 2.7 billion years past, and no mention of the timing of the development of 'sight' by them is discussed, yet we can assume the photosynthetic bacteria which consume CO2 and produce oxygen might have had the capability early on here on Earth.
A salamander referred to in this Yahoo news article as a 'dragon' due to the uncommon looking gills and the fact of it's existence being 'hidden' in caves, giving eyes that are rudimentary after initial formation at birth, this animal is claimed to be able to adapt to eating at intervals of as much as ten years, apparently with no food between meals.
While these posts do not indicate 'extraterrestrial life' as such, they indicate the lack of understanding as to what 'life' is, and the lack of knowledge of the limits of biological diversity and stress coping possible.
I suppose I've been carried away from the topic by now, with references to extreme Earth based life as sampling of the possibilities, but here is another reference to Antarctica and polar animals, resurrection of microbes, more.
